Way back in 1983 it was a film which was one of its kind. There was dance, drama, romance…name the emotion and the film oozed it. 30 years have passed and the film hold the same magic. Everytime I see the film emotions explode in me.
It’s a great love story. A simple one actually. A dancer who is monetarily challenged. His mother does odd jobs and keeps the family going. The dancer simply isn’t ready to see this art form in a commercial angle. A lady, who is a dance patron, walks into his life. She helps him to get into a high-level dance festival. But fate snatches away his mother just two days before the festival. Dancer is all torn apart.
The lady supports him emotionally. Love blossoms between the two. But then he comes to know that this lady is married and separated from her husband. He sacrifices his love to her marriage, because he believes that her marriage is sacred. Years later her husband is no more. Dancer has turned alcoholic and spoilt his health. Lady supports him again. He teaches dance to her daughter and takes his last breath when she understands what dance actually is and performs.
Kamal Haasan acted as the dancer. What a treat it was, watching Kamal’s impeccable acting skills and his classical dance. Jayapradha was the lady who comes into Kamal’s life. The ethereal beauty did more than justice to her role. Viswanath’s direction was simply perfect. Every frame spoke volumes. He brought out the best from his team. Ilayaraja, the music maestro gave his best to this film.
Even to this day; all song of this film gets a big round of applause. Ilayaraja also got national award for this film. Veturi’s poetry for this film will never be forgotten. Mounamelanoyi is my personal favorite. An aesthetically shot number in Telugu film.
Sagara Sangamam became so popular that later it was dubbed as Salangai Oli in Tamil. Also it was dubbed in Malayalam. Kamal Haasan gave his voice for both the dubbed versions. 30 years have gone by and the film still holds that charisma.
